The exciting new art-deco inspired MGM Grand Detroit Hotel and Entertainment complex is the result of a “Grand Vision” aimed at creating luxury and convenience for travelers visiting Detroit. The MGM Grand state-of-the-art 400 room hotel features upscale amenities, a full service hotel spa, three signature restaurants created by celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina, gaming space, meeting rooms, and a parking garage for 5,000 vehicles.
The Midwest Steel Team was an integral part of helping that vision come to life! The scope of this project was the fabrication and erection of the structural and miscellaneous steel for the Casino, and included the long span steel truss for the Grand Ballroom. This critical lift was implemented with only one crane, which significantly reduced the project budget. The Midwest Team worked around the changes in the design of the façade of the Casino and remained over fourteen days ahead of schedule for most of this fast-track project. In fact, with innovative erection techniques, we shaved four weeks from the Podium schedule reducing the project cost and schedule considerably.
The entire project was constructed on a very constricted site. We had the steel delivery trucks wait at a staging yard and then systematically brought them to the erection site and off-loaded according to erection sequence. The entire site was constantly crowded with all trades, however, every contractor was very careful to communicate their work plans and the coordination of all trades on site was exceptional. The project managers and superintendents made it happen! Even though the site was extremely busy and crowded, Midwest Steel had zero incidents and maintained an exemplary safety record!
