Size: 8,200 Tons

Duration: Six Months

Location: Romulus, Michigan

The Midwest Steel Team managed the steel fabrication subcontracts and erected 8,200 Tons of structural steel for the new North Terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Romulus, Michigan.

The new twenty-six (26) gate terminal complex will serve the airlines that have been operating out of the L.C. Smith Terminal for many years: American Airlines, Air Canada, America West, Independence Air, Spirit, Southwest, U.S. Airways and United Airlines. The Complex design of the new terminal includes geometries that required unique connections and innovative erection techniques during the erection phase. The Midwest Team responded quickly to all of the complex changes in the design and incorporated them immediately into the fabrication process and erection sequences. Innovative scheduling was necessary to keep the project on schedule. Even with all the changes, Midwest Steel erected the entire 800,000 square feet (three concourses) in six months. We had an excellent Safety Record on this project - - zero incidents.

Size: 4,800 Tons

Duration: Nine Months

Location: Memphis, Tennessee

The Midwest Steel Team erected 4,800 tons of structural and miscellaneous steel for the new C5 Hangar in Memphis, Tennessee. The entire project consisted of critical lifts. The trusses for the Hangar spanned two hundred sixty feet (260 feet). The timing of each lift was critical because of the FAA Rules and Regulations at this airfield. The cranes had to be boomed down at the close of each work day. The Midwest Team had to take into consideration the critical timing for each lift so that the regulations at the airfield could be met.

The Midwest Team was faced with hazardous weather conditions throughout the duration of the project. There were high winds and ice storms that interrupted the work sequence, and the airport remained active the entire time. However, the Midwest Team managed to complete the project on schedule and with zero safety issues.

Duration: Expected Duration 18 Months

Location: Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Midwest Steel of Detroit Michigan announced that they have been awarded an important structural steel contract to modify NASA's Mobile Launcher for the new Space Launch System at Kennedy Space Center.

Midwest Steel is delighted to have been selected for the structural steel portion of the project by the Prime Contractor, J.P. Donovan Construction of Rockledge, FL. This project will begin immediately and is targeted for completion in 18 months.

This project has the purpose of modifying the existing mobile launcher base from a 24'x24' space to a much larger 32' x 65' space. This increase in size will allow the mobile launcher to accommodate NASA's new Space Launch System and a variety of other launch vehicles.

The NASA Space Launch System will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond Earth orbit. It also will back up commercial and international partner transportation services to the International Space Station. Designed to be flexible for crew or cargo missions, the SLS will be safe, affordable, and sustainable, to continue America's journey of discovery from the unique vantage point of space.

"It is a tremendous honor for all of us at Midwest Steel to have been selected for this project. This is a very unique and challenging project that only the elite of the structural steel industry could undertake." said Tom Broad, Executive Vice President, Midwest Steel.
