The new facility will be versatile, adaptable, and cost-efficient - - ready to face a competitive future with a truly consumer friendly and healing environment.
Midwest Steel is managing the entire steel contract for this project utilizing our Structural Steel Design Assist project delivery system. This approach allowed the Midwest Steel Team to assist the Structural Steel Engineers during the Design Development phase of the project. During this critical phase, Midwest offered an alternate approach to the concrete core - - braced framing - - which reduced the project schedule and the project budget considerably.
The Midwest Steel Team is erecting the steel on an extremely congested site, in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. One large truss created a huge erection challenge to the raising gang. The truss is made up of the largest rolled sections available. These sections create the web members of the truss that is 150 feet long and three stories deep. The truss was set in pieces, on shoring that will be left in place until the floors are poured.
A harsh Michigan Winter has hindered the erection gang's process - - out of 45 days we lost 23 to weather, however, the experienced team was able to finesse the sequencing schedule and in the end they were only one day behind schedule. There were also several changes in scope, and through creative and detailed planning the Midwest Team worked with the Barton Malow Project Management Group to maintain the project schedule and keep costs under budget. We also provided the schedules of our subcontractors to the Project Team for integration into the overall schedule.
The Midwest Steel Team's detailed Safety Plan for the site has resulted in zero discrepancies for Safety audits completed so far, and they have an excellent safety record for this very challenging project - zero incidents. We are very proud to be a part of the team constructing this exciting new Hospital that will provide a futuristic vision of Healthcare at its very best!
