The new 520,000 square foot Providence Park Hospital project represents a new and unique approach to steel contract delivery for Midwest Steel. The Midwest Steel Team presented our Structural Steel Design Assist approach to representatives of the New Providence Hospital Team - - St. John Health System / Providence, BartonMalow, NBBJ Architects, and Korda Structural Engineers, and was subsequently awarded management of the entire steel contract for the project. From the start, the Midwest Team provided innovative solutions and unique suggestions to the Project Team to keep the work flowing, reduce costs, shorten field durations, and reduce risk for the Owner.
Our Team adhered to the original intent of the Structural Steel Design Assist Delivery System by competitively bidding the steel fabrication, metal deck installation, shear stud furnish and install, and painting portions of our contract. A minimum of three bids for each category were accepted, then opened, and the most qualified bidder was awarded a contract.
The strong Midwest Steel Management Team coordinated all subcontracted work, worked closely with the steel fabricator, and ensured that the entire steel team remained on schedule. The Safety Record on the project was excellent - - there were zero incidents. The Structural Steel Design Assist project delivery approach was a huge success - - the Midwest Team shaved over eight weeks from the schedule and reduced project costs significantly.
Steel members were installed between existing concrete rakers that had varying degrees of radius and are connected to a sloped roof, making every piece different, with multiple bevels. Side-wall steel was erected to support the translucent panels which will keep the wind off the baseball fans while letting the light through. The overall individuality of the member sizes required a detailed strategy for the erection and installation of each piece. All electrical for field lighting was coordinated and hoisted in place by the Midwest Team.
The Midwest Team adhered to a tight schedule in spite of severe winter weather conditions, and got the job done. The White Sox played ball as scheduled in their upgraded stadium.
